Ma Boyong Cries Foul Over Ad Inserts In Mystery Of Antiques

Mystery of Antiques ads
Inserted ads in streaming vides are nothing new.  Even Youtube and Facebook have them. To me, they're basically TV commercials for the internet age. It's certainly common to see Chinese dramas series with ad inserts but when is it going too far?

In recent years, quite a few dramas have ads that feature actors who look and dress like their characters. These ads are often inserted while watching the show itself. Such is the case for Mystery Of Antiques, a drama series based on a novel by Ma BoyongMa Boyong criticized the ads, saying that it is detrimental to the series and makes the characters seem less credible, more comical.

Ma Boyong cited an example of this in the first episode of Mystery Of Antiques.  In it, Qiao Zhenyu, who plays one of the leads is seen endorsing a mobile phone app and selling it as a treasure.  This isn't an isolated case as there were similar ad placements for period dramas like Legend of Fuyao and The Mystic Nine

Mystery of Antiques ads
Ma Boyong says that he isn't against advertising as he understands that the purpose is to generate income.  His main gripe comes from the marketing style of these ads, which is more than just product placements.  They place ads in the middle of the show with actors who dress and look like the characters from the  video you were just watching and most users don't have the option to skip these ads.

According to Beijing News, industry insiders believe that although the cost of inserting ads isn't cheap, it is more profitable in the long run.

Truth be told, I find humorous advertisements memorable and therefore, more effective.  But a line must be drawn somewhere.  How much is too much?  Making the people in the ad look and sound like the characters in the said show kinda ruins the experience, especially if the said show is a serious drama.

The Story Of Minglan Director Talks About Finding The Perfect Cast

Zhao Liying Story of Minglan
The Story Of Minglan 知否知否应是绿肥红瘦 is a drama series revolving on the life of the unfavored sixth daughter of an official. It premiered to lukewarm ratings at the beginning though it has been improving as the weeks progress. It seems that ratings have turned out to be just as predicted.

Early on, Director Zhang Kaizhou who is known for his works in Love Me If You Dare and Battle of Changsha said that he was satisfied with the ratings. The Story of Minglan is his first historical drama. He says, "Because the story starts slow and reaches a climax, going from small to big. The process is a gradual climb and there are many exciting moments later on, it will get better and better."

Feng Shaofeng Story of Minglan
Zhang Kaizhou talks about his reasons for casting Zhao Liying, Feng Shaofeng and Zhu Yilong as the leads. According to him, they were the perfect choice saying, "The common characteristic of the three of them is that they are very invested in this series... The plot also gives the actors room to improvise (to make them more believable)"

Zhang Kaizhou said that Feng Shaofeng's portrayal of Gu Tingye was very good. Gu Tingye is written as a person with major character arcs. His relationship with Minglan starts from nothing and turns into a relationship of mutual understanding and love. Zhang thinks that Feng Shaofeng did very well because through his performance, he was able to capture the personality changes that his character undergoes.

According to Zhang, Feng Shaofeng has invested a lot into the role.  "Some viewers don't like it and may have their opinion, I think their concerns are mainly due to the character. Everyone does not approve of Gu Tingye and not the actor's performance of Gu Tingye. There will be very high caliber performances later on." he says.

Zhao Liying Story of Minglan
Asked about whether some supporting characters have stolen the spotlight from the lead characters, Zhang Kaizhou says, "I don't think their performance have overshadowed the leads.  Because the death of Xiao Niang had some impact on Minglan, she has become very subdued.  In the later part of the drama, both Gu Tingye and Minglan's stories will dominate the series.  It is just a process that people will have to patiently wait and see.  As for Zhao Liying's performance, the audience will see a different Zhao Liying throughout the series."

Zhu Yilong Story of MInglan
On Zhu Yilong, Zhang Kaizhou commented that him being in The Story Of Minglan was fate. When he saw Zhu Yilong, Zhang immediately felt that he was a very good fit for Qi Heng. His image is similar to Qi Heng. Through their interactions, he realized that Zhu Yilong is also timid and not an overtly handsome man. When filming began, Zhang says that Zhu Yilong had a deep artistic sense. He liked studying, enjoyed discussions and it is reflected in his acting. He can easily act in a pure art film. From his personality to his work ethics, Zhang acknowledges that Zhu Yilong is a very good actor.

Dylan Wang joins Ever Night 2 as the new Ning Que

Ever Night Season 2 Dylan Wang Song Yiren
Considering that Dylan Wang was recently spotted on the set of Ever Night 2 将夜2, it was only a matter of time before they made it official. He will be joining the show as the main protagonist, replacing Arthur Chen who previously stated that he wouldn't be returning for the sequel.

The look and feel of the series is much like season 1 with the same old umbrella, the same leading lady played by Song Yiren, the same director Yang Yang (not the actor) and producer Wang Yuren

Ever Night Season 2 Dylan Wang
Despite having a rookie actor in the lead, season 1 turned out to be a magical journey on a grand scale that hit all the right spots for fantasy buffs. There's always a big risk that comes with a major casting change and a lot of pressure falling on the shoulders of the new guy. The production team is unanimous in saying that Meteor Garden star Dylan Wang has what it takes to play the role of Ning Que. It is Dylan's first period drama and second drama in his career. Now that he's in costume, what do you think?

Season 2 is expected to continue the story after the great battle as Ning Que returns to Tang Cheng.

Xifei's Royal Love in the Palace Expected To Start Filming Soon

Xifei's Royal Love in the Palace Peter Ho Viva He
It seems that more and more people domestically and internationally are growing an appetite for period dramas, as witnessed by the success of Qing Dynasty dramas like Story Of Yanxi Palace and Ruyi's Royal Love In The Palace.  It's probably good news for folks that Xifei's Royal Love In The Palace based on a novel of the same title is expected to start shooting this year.

The similarity in the English title is no coincidence because it is said to come from the producers of Ruyi. Nothing's been set in stone until the official announcements are made though a Weibo page has already been created.

Xifei's Royal Love in the Palace
Ruyi's Royal Love in the Palace Viva He Hongshan
Insiders reveal that Peter Ho has been cast to play the role of Yongzheng Emperor and Viva He Hong Shan as Zhen Huan. There seems to be mixed reactions on Xifei's Royal Love In The Palace and some wonder if this "Zhen Huan 2.0" will be as good as the first one. We last saw Peter Ho with the Qing Dynasty hairstyle in Nothing Gold Can Stay, and Viva He actually played one of Qianlong's concubines in Ruyi.

Yu Zheng rants about the industry: Bad acting is the director's fault

Zhou Xun Yu Zheng
Producer and screenwriter Yu Zheng recently opened up about his thoughts on the entertainment industry. He talks about how it's a director's job to make sure that acting is on point.  He says,  "While we are complaining about an actor's bad acting, have we considered the lack of guidance by the director?"  Yu Zheng further says, " I am afraid that the director who does not understand the drama has ruined the drama."

Yu Zheng shared the process around choosing the director for Story of Yanxi Palace in 2016. He revealed that there had been meetings with so-called big shot directors and these directors demanded exorbitant fees even without understanding the script. These are people that have filmed big productions or have ties to popular idols or work as a certain director's assistant.

Wu Jinyan Story of Yanxi Palace
When a netizen commented that there was something wrong with the way Wu Jinyan delivered her lines. Yu Zheng defended the actress saying that there was no problem with Wu Jinyan's lines. He said that of course, she cannot compare to industry veterans. However, if three-time Gold Awarded film actresses are only up to this level, how good do you expect a young actress born in the nineties to be?

With such a response, Yu Zheng immediately got flak for throwing shade at industry veterans (assumed to be Zhou Xun of Ruyi's Royal Love in the Palace). Zhou Xun has won the big 3 acting accolades from the Golden Horse Award, Hong Kong Film Award and Golden Rooster Award over the course of her career.

Zhou Xun Ruyi's Royal Love in the Palace
Yu Zheng's wrote a follow up post on Weibo, "The intention is to call attention to every aspect of the industry.  Why are there so many stupid people who always take someone's words out of context?  It's ridiculous."  He ended his post by saying "What I mean is that even multi-awarded film actresses can't be completely without fault, the occasional question of one or two lines should not be brought up, give her (Wu Jinyan) time, slowly see her progress."

Here's the thing. I believe Yu Zheng has a point here. He could've said it better without throwing shade at anyone else but this is Yu Zheng we're talking about. It should be the director's job to steer the production in the right direction. If you have a great director who's worth his salt and has a passion for what he does, chances are, you're getting a quality production.  Settle for a mediocre one... well, you get what you pay for.

NRTA Reveals Dramas With Episode Count Changes

The Longest Day in Chang An Jackson Yee Lei Jiayin
It could be for many reasons that a drama series has to cut down or increase their episode count. The National Radio and Television Administration (NRTA) released a list of drama series that recently made changes to their episode count.

The Legends 50 to 55
Hai Zhi Yao 36 to 45
One Step to the Heavens 40 to 50
Another Me 48 to 53
All Is Well 55 to 46
Puzzle 40 to 52
Qing Yu Nian 52 to 46
August Not The End 80 to 60
Chen Xi Yuan 58 to 60

Among them, the most noticeable is The Longest Day In Chang'An for having a drastic reduction from 60 to 26 episodes! It is an action thriller based on the novel of the same name by Ma Bo Yong starring Jackson Yee and Lei Jiayin. Netizens immediately feared that the reason for the drastic change could be censorship.

The Longest Day in Chang An Jackson Yee
Director Cao Dun appeases viewers with an explanation.  Apparently, The Longest Day In Chang'An is divided into 2 parts for the NRTA review.  The first part reviewed by NRTA was 26 episodes long and the second part is still in post production.  Cao Dun reassures that no substantial cuts were made.

First Stills of Tian Long Ba Bu remake starring Tony Yang and Janice Man

Tian Long Ba Bu cdrama 2019 Yang Youning
Tony Yang as Qiao Feng
The drama adaptation of Tian Long Ba Bu (Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils) 天龙八部 based on a novel of the same name held its opening ceremony for the Dali portion of filming today. At a time when a number of Jin Yong classics like The Return of the Condor Heroes and Heavenly Sword and Dragon Slying Saber are also getting remakes, the trend seems to gear towards choosing newcomers to play iconic wuxia characters.

Tian Long Ba Bu cdrama 2019 Janice Man
Janice Man as Wang Yuyan

Tian Long Ba Bu cdrama 2019 Bai Shu
Bai Shu as Duan Yu
Tian Long Ba Bu may not have the biggest stars but it brings together many familiar faces. That in itself opens up the show to public comment both good and bad, though I think it's paid off with a cast that seem perfect for their roles. Even though filming has been ongoing for months, the only news that has come out was when one of its stars Viva He reportedly got into a minor accident after falling off a horse.

Tian Long Ba Bu cdrama 2019 Zhang Tianyang
Zhang Tianyang as Xu Zhu

Tian Long Ba Bu cdrama 2019 Su Qing
Su Qing as A Zhu
Tian Long Ba Bu cdrama 2019 Viva He Hongshan
Viva He Hongshan as A Zi
After all the secrecy, the show finally introduces the cast with new stills and a new rounds of filming to begin in Dali, Yunnan Province. Truth be told, I tired midway through the 2013 adaptation of the story, but this is looking good! Tony Yang (Monster Hunt 2) is not my first choice for Qiao Feng but his transformation after the costume and hair is quite convincing. I could say the same for the rest of the cast.

Janice Man (Tribes and Empires: Storm of Prophecy) plays the beautiful Wang Yuyan. The 25-year-old actor Bai Shu (My Girlfriend's Boyrfriend) is a blank page to me but visually appealing as Duan Yu. Zhang Tianyang (The Legend of Jasmine) plays Xu Zhu. Su Qing (Story of Yanxi Palace) and Viva He Hongshan (Ruyi's Royal Love in the Palace) play A Zhu and A Zi. After Viva He's performance as the bratty consort in Ruyi, she seems perfect for A Zi.

Can Darren Wang and Jelly Lin Pull Off School Genius and Ditz in It Started With A Kiss?

It Started With A Kiss 2019 movie remake
Everyone might remember the popular drama series It Started With A Kiss which was adapted from the Japanese manga Itazura Na Kiss. How can we forget Ariel Lin's portrayal of the cute and ditzy Xiangqin and Joe Cheng's Jiang Zhishu? It was a big hit back in 2006 and earned several adaptations including Thai and Korean ones.  And now in 2019, we're having an It Started With A Kiss movie!!

It Started With A Kiss 2019 movie remake
Jelly Lin and Darren Wang take on the roles of Yuan Xiangqin and Jiang Zhishu in this heartwarming rendition of a timeless classic directed by Frankie Chen.  The movie is slated to be released on Feb, 14, Valentine's Day.

It Started With A Kiss 2019 movie remake Jelly Lin Yun
For a while now, netizens seem divided on whether Darren Wang is a good choice to play Jiang Zhishu and it has been the point of controversy since the selection process.  People might remember Darren Wang from the movie "Our Times" where he played Hsu Taiyu, a campus gang boss.  As opposed to Darren's bad boy Hsu Taiyu character, Jiang Zhishu is quiet and indifferent.

And this is most likely why people are having a hard time picturing Darren Wang as Jiang Zhishu since Darren's portrayal of a shady and strong delinquent has stuck. Some commented, "Thanks for ruining my childhood."  "Darren Wang doesn't look convincing as someone from Class A." and "Not everyone can become Yuan Xiangqin and Jiang Zhishu."

After seeing the preview, there are those who changed their minds, saying things like "Jelly Lin is pretty." to "How can Darren be so handsome?" and "The feeling of being dynamic... I think it's pretty good."

It Started With A Kiss 2019 movie remake Darren Wang Talu
My opinion, though, is that Jelly Lin as Yuan Xiangqin is a good choice. She has that ditzy, impulsive vibe to her that makes playing Xiangqin convincing.  Darren Wang's character Jiang Zhishu is serious to a fault. And that makes him adorable.  From the trailer, Darren seems to be able to carry that with ease, showing a different side of himself to the audience.
