A second drama adaptation of Unrequited Love features a new cast
We're only missing the official announcement now as Hu Yitian (Handsome Siblings), Hu Bingqing (Twenties Once Again) and Zhang Yijie (The King of Blaze) were spotted yesterday at a function to commence filming for Unrequited Love暗恋橘生淮南, a drama based on another book from Ba Yue Chang An's 八月长安 trilogy.
It seems natural to turn this into a drama too when the other two adaptations of With You and My Huckleberry Friendswere so well-received. There is in fact already a completed web drama based on the same story that is just waiting to air. This version clearly has bigger stars and puts Hu Yitian back in school uniform. Although it is also about a school crush, this feels more like A Love So Beautiful'sangsty cousin and brings a different vibe altogether. I'm actually curious to see how it will fare in comparison to the web drama and the two previous adaptations. Update: The booting ceremony was held on Dec. 5 to commence filming.
This is a web drama that wouldn't have been on my radar otherwise, but first week numbers look promising as the show makes it into the top 10. Even with new leads for its third season, The Demon Master broke 100 million views within 24 hours and has reached 300 million views 7 days after premiere.
Our Glamorous Time is currently at 2.96 billion on Tencent, 19 days after premiere. Total views will be higher as the show also streams on iQiYi.
Ever Night is currently at 2.3 billion views on Tencent, 31 days after premiere.
Hi, I'm Saori is currently at 1.2 billion views on Youku, 19 days after premiere.
An Oriental Odyssey is currently at 2.24 billion views on Tencent, 44 days after premiere.
Never Gone: So You Are Still Heredropped a poster 2 days ago to celebrate crossing 600 million views. It is currently at 678 million views on Youku, 25 days after premiere.
When We Were Young is currently at 270 million views 9 days after premiere.
Royal Highnessdropped a poster a few days ago to celebrate crossing 500 million views. It is currently at 569 million views on Youku, 30 days after premiere.
The King of Blaze dropped a poster to celebrate reaching 200 million views 3 days after premiere. So much for months of anticipation, I ended up dropping this. Curious to hear what other people think.

What Are the Major TV and Movie Awards for Chinese Viewers?
With the Golden Horse Awards receiving international attention from the recent controversies, I figured it would be nice and informative to do a rundown of the major awards shows that are relevant in China. Traditionally speaking, film awards are the most prestigious followed by TV awards and music.
These are the three major awards for TV.
Golden Eagle Awards 2018
Golden Eagle Awards
The Golden Eagle Award 金鹰奖, also known as the China Golden Eagle TV Art Festival, was established in 1983. Originally a national award, this is now sponsored by the China Federation of Literary and Artistic Circles, the China Television Artists Association, the People's Government of Hunan Province, etc. The event is organized and held in Changsha and broadcasted on Hunan TV. Previously held annually, the event switched to biennial in 2005. It is the only TV award that accounts for audience voting, hence being dubbed as the 'public's award'.
Flying Asparas Awards 2018
Flying Apsaras Awards
The Flying Asparas Award 飞天奖, also known as the Feitian Awards, is one of the oldest TV awards in China after being established in 1980. This is sponsored by the State Press, Publication and Radio and Television Administration. Previously held annually, the event switched to biennial in 2005. It is the most authoritative awarding body in the country and dubbed as the 'government award'. There are generally less categories and celebrity attendance is not that high.
Magnolia Awards 2018
Magnolia Awards
The Magnolia Award 白玉兰奖, also known as the Shanghai TV Festival Magnolia Awards, was established in 1986. It is an international festival sponsored by National Radio and Television Administration, formerly known as SARFT. The magnolia signifies purity and the paramount of art, it is the official flower of the city of Shanghai.
These are the three major awards for Chinese-language movies, five including Hundred Flowers Award and Hua Biao Film Awards which make up the big 3 in China.
Golden Rooster Awards 2017
Golden Rooster Awards
The Golden Rooster Award 金鸡奖 is a film award established in 1981 incidentally on the year of the Rooster; hence the name. The winners are selected by a jury of filmmakers and the award is given out by the China Film Association.
It was initially only for Mainland Chinese nominees but was opened to Hong Kong, Taiwan and others in 2005 in a push to become competitive with the Golden Horse Awards. This has also been held biennially alternating with the Hundred Flowers Awards since 2005. Every year, the event is jointly referred to as the Golden Rooster and Hundred Flowers Film Festival.

It's all about serendipity as a germaphobe and struggling college student keep stumbling upon each other in this fun and vibrant drama adaption of a popular webtoon.
Gil Oh-So (Kim Yoo-Jung) can't seem to catch a break, juggling odd jobs as she tries to get by in college. Her family's financial situation worsens when her father is let go from his job, leaving her at her wits end to land something stable. By chance, she applies to be a cleaning fairy at a company owned by Jang Seon-Gyul (Yoon Kyun-Sang) a germaphobe and seemingly pretentious man whose rubbed her the wrong way and has left her humiliated through previous encounters. Oh-So's sloppish and quirky ways have their effect and slowly cures Seon-Gyul of his mysophobia and the distance he creates between himself and others.
The first two episodes were a fairly breezy and nice watch, with nothing too unexpected except for the hilarious and outrageous ending to episode 1 that had me choking on air. Overall, the drama seems a bit underwhelming since it has a simple if somewhat basic plot we've seen before with main characters that aren't new to dramaland. That being the case, I find it watchable and a far cry from the disappointing rom-coms I've been coming across lately since the drama's cast and simplicity give off a feel-good atmosphere and romantic fluff you can't help but divulge into.
What I really have to appreciate is the production team's effort to cast actors who are good at their craft, with experience under their belt to make us all intrigued. I love Kim Yoo-Jung's performance here since her character could easily cross the fine line that already exists to be a frustrating and annoying female lead but she manages to remain within the lines, establishing Oh-So as a girl with quirks but with normal struggles and desires.
Yoon Kyun-Sang can't be described as anything but a giant, squishy teddy bear in comparison. Other than the height difference being adorable, I think he's harnessed his character perfectly to give us a more illustrious and exaggerated CEO but also as a man with a dysfunctional childhood and odd family dynamics.
As the son of a single mother whose never had to raise him because of her wealth, and a physically oppressive grandfather who doesn't want his grandson to be belittled by others, a complex and messy family life are Seon-Gyul's reason for being a germaphobe. So I guess the show isn't entirely rainbows, unicorns, and fluff but the added depth to our characters does make a significant difference so the viewer finds more substance in the drama and isn't simply expecting the chemistry between the leads to be the singular driving force of the whole series.
I'm not sure where to place Song Jae-Rim's character since he's still a bit of a mystery but he's shaping up to be an endearing second male lead that'll play a pivotal role in Oh-So's life. After a one-sided crush leaves her heartbroken and becomes an eye-opener as to how innocent she truly is, the main men in this story are wholeheartedly welcome and add more colour and vibrancy into her crumbling life. There's already signs of friendship and a few sparks flying but the relationship progression Oh-So has with Seon-Gyul and her mysterious neighbour is steady and believable, never thrust upon us.
I like the build-up of the drama so far despite the story being somewhat flat since the comedy and romance are quite nice even if its material we've seen before. I'm not too sure where the drama is headed but I'd look at it positively in the meantime, before coming to a final conclusion of whether this deserves a spot on my weekly drama watch.
It could have that elemental surprise and prove us all wrong; there has to be a reason why so many familiar faces and actors who can do just about anything would want to be in a small series of a webtoon adaption. I'm hoping on better reveals and romance formations next week to give me that reason to stay since the drama really isn't bad at all, I just wouldn't call it great or say I'm sold from the get-go.
Miss Buyer 买定离手我爱你 is a workplace drama set in the fashion industry. Instead of designers, it revolves around buyers and follows a young woman who sets out to learn the ropes in her new profession.A rookie's journey to success feels a bit been there, done that though this could potentially be a cute watch with enough charisma and light-heartedness, at least I hope that's the direction they're taking.
I've seen Tina Tang Yixin (Rule the World) in many supporting roles. In fact, I find it amusing that both her and leading man Zhai Tianlin (The Family) have played villains in their previous dramas. They also both starred in Advisors Alliance. Here, she crosses paths and clashes with him, a top designer in the industry.
Other characters include her teacher, a top buyer played by Li Yuan (Chinese Paladin 5) and the big boss, played by Yuan Wenkang (An Oriental Odyssey).
Show Luo gets a buzz cut for the first time in his career
I don't know how many of you guys follow Show Luo but I definitely had a phase back then. He was actually trending on weibo for a bit earlier this week because of his new hairstyle where he's sporting a buzz cut. A sad Xiao Zhu shared photos of his new do with a message to his fans, "You always tell me to cut my hair, okay, I cut......Goodbye long hair, I will miss you!" His manager Xiao Shuang said that she wanted to stop him but it was too late so she shares this videoinstead.
I don't know why I found this funny, maybe because I still remember how extremely hair conscious Show Luo of the past was, he's clearly the kind of guy who takes pride in his long locks.
He seems to be gearing up to promote a new album as he has just uploaded a new photo with the caption, "NO JOKE Coming soon." But what is that, his hair grew back 😂?
